Beauty and the Beast. 1991. USA. Directed by Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise. 84 min. Supervising animation by Glen Keane and others. Music by Alan Menken. With the voices of Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Angela Lansbury, Jerry Orbach, David Ogden Stiers. Thanks in no small part to Glen Keane, Beauty and the Beast was the first animated feature to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Keane’s unforgettable work on the Beast, together with his Ariel in The Little Mermaid two years earlier, helped bring about the revitalization of Disney character animation. Beast was a hybrid of lion, gorilla, wild boar, buffalo, bear, wolf, and human, and his climactic metamorphosis is among the most stirring moments in Disney history. This special screening is an amuse-bouche before our Modern Mondays evening with Glen Keane and John Canemaker (Tickets required). Courtesy Walt Disney Studios.
