Boom - FlyBy - Live Blog: Overture Superfactory Construction Progression (2024)

On June 17, 2024, Boom celebrated the completion of construction on the Overture Superfactory, the first supersonic airliner factory in the United States. The final assembly line for Boom’s supersonic airliner, Overture, the Superfactory will strengthen next-generation American leadership in aerospace manufacturing.

Boom will now focus on operationalizing production. The first assembly line has the capacity to produce 33 Overture aircraft annually. Boom plans to build an additional assembly line, scaling production to produce 66 supersonic airliners annually. The campus will include a delivery center for global airlines, including United, American, and Japan Airlines. Overture aircraft built here will be flown by hundreds of millions of passengers worldwide.

Located at the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, the completion of Superfactory construction comes just 17 months after Boom first broke ground on the site in January 2023.

May 2023: Foundation rails are placed.

“The first assembly line here at the Superfactory campus is designed to produce up to 33 aircraft per year. We have plans on this campus for a second assembly line, which will allow us to double production to a rate of 66 aircraft per year. Construction as we sit here today is well underway. It’s on track to be complete in the middle of next year.”

September 2023: We celebrated “topping out” at the Overture Superfactory.

In September, we commemorated a construction milestone by “topping out” the Overture Superfactory when the final structural beam was raised into place, completing the building’s frame. This milestone comes after Boom recently finished the decking on top of the structure and has begun installing the metal side panels which make up the walls. The pouring of concrete flooring slabs was also started in recent weeks. With a significant portion of the exterior building constructed, the Overture Superfactory continues to take shape and remains on track for completion in 2024.

“We continue to be pleased with the progress on the Overture Superfactory, our final assembly line for Overture. This milestone is a testament to the hard work of the numerous trade teams who are building the Superfactory, and marks an important step forward in building the sustainable supersonic future in the Piedmont Triad.”

– Chris Taylor, Vice President of Manufacturing, Boom Supersonic

June 2024: Overture Superfactory construction is completed.

“Construction of the Overture Superfactory represents a major milestone toward ensuring the United States’ continued leadership in aerospace manufacturing.” Supersonic flight will transform air travel, and Overture provides a much-needed innovative alternative for airlines across the globe.”

– Blake Scholl, Founder & CEO, Boom Supersonic

The Overture Superfactory site will include the final assembly line, test facility and customer delivery center for Boom’s flagship supersonic airliner, Overture. Overture aircraft produced at the Superfactory will bring vital innovation to aviation and set a new standard for global air travel.

Taking flight in North Carolina

The Overture Superfactory will build on North Carolina’s distinguished history of aviation innovation, including the Wright Brothers flying the world’s first engine-powered airplane in Kitty Hawk in 1903. The supersonic airliner factory also positions the region to be an aerospace leader well into the future.

North Carolina economists estimate that the full Boom manufacturing program will grow the state’s economy by at least $32.3 billion over 20 years, with the Superfactory directly adding more than 2,400 jobs.

“As the state that was first in flight, North Carolina is excited to see Boom’s progress toward delivering the world’s first sustainable supersonic airliner,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “Our state has the skilled workforce, infrastructure and perfect location to help Boom revolutionize air travel.”

“The Piedmont Triad region is an economic powerhouse, helping solidify North Carolina’s place as the top state for business. Boom’s Overture Superfactory, which will produce a paradigm-changing airliner, showcases the new and innovative projects that are bringing jobs and investment here,” said North Carolina Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger.

Committed to a sustainable supersonic Superfactory

The Overture Superfactory will be LEED Certified and energy efficient. Sustainability is at the core of Boom’s work, as it is for our construction partner, BE&K Building Group.

The Overture Superfactory is projected to be at least 40% more energy efficient than similar facilities. In addition to prioritizing sustainable products, the facility will integrate urban heat mitigation materials, high-efficiency LED lighting, and water conservation systems to reduce energy and water consumption.
